This post is part of my 12 Season Color Theory series, which aims to break down the best and worst colors for your “color season,” or what we call your unique blend of hair and eye color, skin tone, and contrast. There are 4 overall seasons (spring, summer, etc), and 3 subcategories within those seasons (one of which is featured on this page!) You might want to start here if you are new to this series. If you think you are another subcategory under the Autumn type, you can find all 3 of the Autumn types discussed here.
I have a soft spot for the Soft Autumn type because, well, I am one! If you also think you are a Soft Autumn, you are likely someone who has looks really good in creams, tans, beiges with a warmer undertone, like camel or khaki, and you may have noticed that you don’t look the best in something that is “straw” colored or too green.
Hair and Eye Color
- You are likely to have honey, golden, or brown hair. If you are blonde, you are likely a darker honey blonde.
- Your eyes are hazel, light green, or brown (as you may have predicted).
Best Colors for Soft Autumn Types
You look good in beige, cream, and neutrals with a warmer tone (light tan, camel) and you generally prefer gold jewelry over silver. You take inspiration from Drew Barrymore or Gisele.
I would stay away from cool (lime) green and that lavender shade of pink that is too cool for your skin and washes you out. Instead, choose a coral to complement your skin tone or a teal blue that contrasts with it without cutting against it.
Here are some of my top picks to help you bring out your neutral tones.
Sidenote:
As someone who likes to change her hair color and wear color contacts, I find that I can “shift” color seasons. For instance, when I keep my hair close to my natural black hair, I default to Deep Autumn (which is a type with more contrast between hair and skin color. and who can wear deeper shades of fall Autumn colors). However, I love the neutral and lighter shades of Soft Autumn and often ask for a balayage that gives my hair a honey color. I thought this factoid might be interesting for those of you who might be in between color seasons or who also must change their wardrobes when changing their hair.
However, note that I still stay within the Autumn family. For instance, I would never be a Spring type because I lack the clear and cool-toned complexion that goes with that type — my skin is firmly warmer and more golden.
Overall, I hope my suggestions will hopefully be a rough guideline for what colors might work best for you, but they are by no means hard and fast rules. Even if they were rules, if there’s one thing we know about fashion, it’s that rules were made to be broken on occasion! Besides, there are so many variations of colors (not to mention variations in people!) that there are bound to be exceptions or close calls. Nonetheless, I hope you find these posts helpful in determining the best colors for you to wear to bring out your natural beauty. Please let me know what you think in the comments below.
