I woke up one day in mid-September with the sudden feeling that I needed to get out of town. Go somewhere and see some new patch of sky, and do something I would never otherwise do. I called up a girl friend and asked her if she wanted to go on a leaf-peeping tour of New England the next month.
“Sure,” she said. She had apparently been bitten by the wanderlust bug as well.
We knew we wanted to hit the Mecca for foliage sightseeing – Vermont – but were indifferent as to the particular towns — until we saw a listing for an Airbnb on an alpaca farm. You could even arrange with the host to pet and feed the alpacas, who grazed on a field not 20 feet from the guest apartment where you lived.

It was quite an amusing (but very fitting!) start to what was already an amusing trip — two girls from New York and Miami, respectively, who thought the city was not exciting enough and wanted to escape to some place rural.
Well, as you can see, we had a grand ole time the first day we drove out of the hustle and bustle and into a town where there were no streetlights on the street. Here, we tried enticing the alpacas by whistling and rolled around (literally) in the grassy field across from our generous host’s house.
At night, you couldn’t see anything except for some stars. There was virtually no cell service. But somehow it was just what we needed. I think I had the best sleep of my life that night, and woke up early to hang out with my new four-legged friends again.
You can book your own alpaca/foliage experience here — and tell them we sent you!
Stay tuned for the next leg of our journey — as we get more serious about our journey upstate to peep some leaves and take in the views of fall in New England.
