A classic example of “it’s the journey and not the destination” — we would’ve never discovered this trail and horse pasture if we were intent on heading straight to Smuggler’s Notch like everyone else in Stowe.
Smuggler’s Notch is that scenic twisting road that leads up and down the famous ski slopes of Stowe. In the fall, it’s a veritable cornucopia of foliage, and the bends in the road make for especially beautiful photos.
However, it’s a good thing we were in no hurry because this pasture of ponies caught my eye as we drove past a clearing. Once we pulled over and parked, we realized that the trail and surrounding park was actually the very well-marked Thompson Park, which sort of deflated our elation at being “explorers,” but our bruised egos were soon forgotten as we walked the bike trail next to our new four-legged friends. These horses even came within 2 feet of us, although they didn’t stay long, frustrated with our lack of food offerings. Nonetheless, it was a memorable sideshow and encouraged us to keep our eyes peeled as we made our way up to the Notch.
Sweater dress; Free People, similar in medium green here from Amazon or in dark green here from Shein // Boots: Tieland boots from Stuart Weitzman //
The Free People sweater dress that I’m wearing here is one of my favorites. It’s super comfortable and has a beautiful knitted pattern that never looks dated. However, since it’s from a few years ago, I’ve linked a few similarly gorgeous knit sweater dresses below.
